great repertoire!
If your child is beginning violin these books and cds may well be part of the curicculum. I'm a bit older and decided to teach myself violin after dabbling a little with fiddle music. The first 3 books of this series really give you a great foundation and contain some great pieces to play. They are challanging enough but it's at book 4 that things start to get more intermediate with the Bach double concerto for instance. Don't get me wrong though because in the first 3 books there is really a wealth of great materialincluding several Bach pieces, Dvorak's Humoresque and many more familiar works. Of course you will definetly want and need to get the cds that accompany each book and as well as each piece with the piano accompanyment they also contain the accompanyment alone so you can practice the violin along with just that. I see amazon is charging list price as does almost everyone else, music stores etc. Shar Music, which deals only in violins, violas, cellos and related...

The one, the only and still the greatest
To the parents of children undertaking the violin, be advised. The detractors that have reservations about the Suzuki method/book are missing two basic facts a) your child will learn how to play the violin (beautifully with some effort), and b) that this is really the only method that directly addresses the daunting task of teaching a string instrument to a child with pre-reading or early reading skills. Like it or not, agree with it or not, this is the method that your teacher will more probably than not adopt. It really does work; I have seen a string orchestra, taught by Suzuki, performing the Bach Concerto for 2 Violins in which none of the performers was over 12. Lest you read other reviews and be tempted to pass on Suzuki for some more "conventional" method, give this book and a good teacher a try, and be amazed at the skills that your child displays.

very good
I like this new version of Suzuki violin book 1. It's more cluttered looking with the extra text which makes it a little harder to read the notes than the old version, but it does give the new student useful info. Of course, there is nothing like having a teacher help you refine the skills explained in the book.I also like the ABCs of Violin books and DVDs. Many of my Suzuki colleagues and I think the ABCs of Violin and Viola books are excellent as reading supplements, but we begin adult students in the ABCs of Violin and Viola books which are more appropriate for that age group than the suzuki books.

Book is as Presented
I don't doubt that the other reviewer may have received the "older" version of this music book. I just received it and it is the revised edition with the "colorful" cover. My experience with Amazon since its inception has been mostly good - if what I had received was not what was presented on the site, I'm sure Amazon would correct the problem.

meh
it looks nice, but the glue they use to hold the suzuki logo on is cheap and reliquifies if it gets too hot, making the suzuki logo pop off and a sticky mess if left unattented, get some super glue or epoxy and reattach the logo, never come off again.

surprising book about life & nurturing talent
I thought this would be a book about the Suzuki method of converting toddlers into musicians -- revealing some of the secrets about what makes the Suzuki method unique & what makes it effective. It was that, but much more. What I knew as the "Suzuki method," Shinichi Suzuki calls "Talent Education," based on the underlying philosophy that all children can be well-educated and all talent can be nurtured. Suzuki believes that talent is developed, not inherited; he believes in nurturing the talent in each child, in creating a culturally-supportive environment and coupling it with training to develop mediocrity into excellence. Suzuki exlains how & why he developed "Talent Education," drawing on his own experiences as a musician and during WWII. His text is filled with anecdotes about students, many of whom became quite successful as musicians, many of whom teach at conservatories around the world. Suzuki's "method" includes focus...

Excellent book - enlightening
I am new to Suzuki Violin and when my instructor assigned this book I thought I was going to read a book about music, but instead a read a book about how to live a beautiful life! What a great gift Suzuki was to the world -- I wish everyone could read his books -- it truly would be a better world as a result!

Product Description

This book is the cornerstone upon which to build any Suzuki-oriented library. In it the author presents the philosophy and principles of Suzuki's teaching methods. Through the examples from his own life and teaching, Suzuki establishes his case for early childhood education and the high potential of every human being, not just those seemingly gifted. Written by Shinichi Suzuki, translated by Waltraud Suzuki. Top to learn more

Inspirational
This book by Shinichi Suzuki is part-description of the principles of his Talent Education method, part-snapshots of personal history, part-statements on his philosophy of life. It is written with great optimism and love for humane development of children into noble people. Based on his observation that all children speak their mother tongue fluently (and are thus highly capable to be educated in many disciplines) and on his belief that talent is not inherited but learned, Suzuki's method concentrates on creating the best environment for child development. His famous violin teaching method incorporates parent involvement, listening to the same piece many times and extensive practice, among others. Importance of memory training and good mentors (Einstein was one of Suzuki's) is stressed. Many real-life stories illustrate his points. By way of criticism, while themes of compassion and developing a noble character recur throughout the book, it takes some effort to piece it all...

A beloved classic of American Zen
This is a collection of talks by one of the first Zen teachers in the U.S. If you're already practicing Zen, I highly recommend this book. If you're new to Zen, you might love this book or you might find it largely incomprehensible, or maybe both. Suzuki makes liberal use of the paradoxical language that is typical of Zen--e.g., "For us, complete perfection is not different from imperfection. The eternal exists because of non-eternal existence." If you'd prefer a more ordinary, explanatory style, I recommend Charlotte Joko Beck's "." If you're looking for practical instruction in Zen meditation, you'll find it in "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind," but you might prefer either Philip Kapleau's...

Mind at one with Tao
Anyone interested in reading this book should not be dissuaded by the negative rantings of the "humble monk" and "Dharma teacher", whose reviews appear to be from the same person. This book does not disappoint. I first read it over 25 years ago and I've fondly returned to it time and again since. This book is intended as a look at 'Zen Mind', mind at one with Tao. The term 'Beginner's Mind' refers to the goal of always keeping our original beginner's mind in our practice. To awaken to this mind, Suzuki encourages the practice of Zazen, for when we take the Zazen posture we are at once aligned with The Buddha and all of the Patriarchs, we perfectly express our own Buddha nature. The act of sitting itself is the actualization of Buddha Nature or Being. This IS the practice of Zen. Zen is a practice, not a religion and as thus can not be blasphemed in the way that the negative reviewer asserts. Religion is an attitude of devotion to something other...

Product Description

"In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert's there are few."

So begins this most beloved of all American Zen books.  Seldom has such a small handful of words provided a teaching as rich as has this famous opening line.  In a single stroke, the simple sentence cuts through the pervasive tendency students have of getting so close to Zen as to completely miss what it's all about.  An instant teaching on the first page.  And that's just the beginning.

In the forty years since its original publication, Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind has become one of the great modern spiritual classics, much beloved, much reread, and much recommended as the best first book to read on Zen. Suzuki Roshi presents the basics—from the details of posture and breathing in zazen to the perception of nonduality—in a way that is not only remarkably clear, but that also resonates with the joy of insight from the first to the last page. A respected Zen master in Japan and founder of the San Francisco Zen Center, Shunryu Suzuki has blazed a path in American Buddhism like few others. He is the master who climbs down from the pages of the koan books and answers your questions face to face. If not face to face, you can at least find the answers as recorded in Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind, a transcription of juicy excerpts from his lectures. From diverse topics such as transience of the world, sudden enlightenment, and the nuts and bolts of meditation, Suzuki always returns to the idea of beginner's mind, a recognition that our original nature is our true nature. With beginner's mind, we dedicate ourselves to sincere practice, without the thought of gaining anything special. Day to day life becomes our Zen training, and we discover that "to study Buddhism is to study ourselves." And to know our true selves is to be enlightened. --Brian Bruya Top to learn more

Misleading title for a possibly great book
I do not want to detract from this book's worth or wisdom in any way. No doubt the glowing reviews reflect the book's significance to the lives of those who have read and UNDERSTOOD it.My only caveat is that for complete novices--like myself--the title is misleading, and therefore the book's teachings were not very accessible to me. The term "beginner's mind," as used in this work, refers to the idea of maintaining an open, childlike mind, and never acting or feeling as though one has ACHIEVED enlightenment. Be always searching, always growing."Beginner's mind" should NOT be taken as an indication that this is a book for those like myself who are newcomers to the study of Zen (i.e. "beginners"). Maybe you're an "old soul," but new to Zen, in which case, you may get more out of this book than I currently do.As someone who instinctively feels that Zen has something BIG to offer me if only I can understand what the hell the books on Zen are talking...

From Alberta it's usually far less expensive to rail to Vancouver, tanker through the Panama Canal and deliver to Toronto and unload than it is to rail it across the country. Rail is far cheaper than truck transport (on the order of 10x the cost), but far more expensive than supertanker (which is on the order of 10% of the cost). 1st Saint Nicolaas Army My contempt for cry-baby, elitist bullies like David Suzuki knows no bounds. From the Krause article: “. . . Further, in an open letter sent last week, Mr. Suzuki, Canada’s foremost environmentalist, suggested that his foundation is being ‘bullied. The reason that coal power plants and built right beside the coal mines that power them (even when they're owned by different companies/government) is that they are willing to buy the entire output. And this fork-tongued jerk and uber hypocrite has actually said that politicians who don’t bow before His Holiness, Saint Suzuki and do His bidding should go to jail. For the Rockefeller Foundation funding Suzuki to turn off the taps to others is a bit rich. Provided that the premium earned is greater than the additional cost of railing it. Railing it also means a much quicker spool up and getting the oil to new customers. I don't have direct experience with pipelines, but would estimate that they should have operating costs of less than half of that of rail (when dealing with a liquid medium - I'm in coal, remember: getting the medium and maintaining it is another... The Suzuki Foundation is acting the role of 'environmental hustler' on the matter of resource extraction. The time it takes to ship at sea is less important than the cost, the buyer factors that into their plans (so coal delivered to Ridley Island in Prince Rupert can get the same selling price as Roberts Bank or Neptune in Vancouver, despite being a...

Suzuki’s diminished voice has been accompanied by a sales decrease of 2 percent through March versus the similar period in 2011, at a time when the United States auto market has been rapidly expanding. “We’re currently on television in 20 regional markets and have some national print advertising,” Jeff Holland, senior public relations manager for American Suzuki, said in a telephone interview. It’s a question facing American Suzuki Motor, as it slashes marketing budgets and sheds dealer franchises.

Fascists are working overtime to make Canadian democracy into one sick joke – the joke’s on Canadians and I for one am not laughing. Wildrose is now doing to the PCs what the PCs have always done with the Liberals, and Albertans (so it seems) are dutifully lapping it up. Different party, but otherwise: same old, same old. This is Alberta, though– a province of largely good people who have been bombarded with so much fear mongering propaganda about liberals and liberalism that they will vote for the right, even if they have to hold their noses to do it (as many... sometimes that gets the better of rationality – that I think is the case in the blue hat remarks as it is in the *specific* case of the Suzuki tweets. I want to believe the polls are wrong, and that Albertans are actually pausing to think carefully about Wildrose since the distasteful beliefs and behaviour of some of their candidates and supporters has come to light.

In 2004, the Suzuki foundation listed its largest donors, including U. S. foundations, as having contributed “more than $10,000,” when in fact Hewlett granted $750,000 over three years, Packard granted $340,000 and the Lannan Foundation gave... 7-million from the Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation (“Moore”), US$1-million from the Wilburforce Foundation, US$955,000 from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, US$930,000 from the Seattle-based Bullitt Foundation and at least US$181,000 from the... Of the $81-million that the Suzuki Foundation took in from 2000 to 2010, $44-million was from tax-receipted donations, $9-million was from other charities and $25-million (31%) was from unspecified gifts and other revenue. Since the late 1990s, U. S. tax returns show that American foundations have made at least 30 grants to the David Suzuki Foundation, each for a value of US$100,000 or more. In 2006, Suzuki’s foundation listed the Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation as having contributed “more than $5,000. Tax returns also show that $3-million came from investment and rental income, sales of goods and services, and so on. Between 2000 and 2010, total annual revenues doubled at the Suzuki foundation from $5-million to $10. In annual reports for 2001, 2002 and 2003, Suzuki’s foundation mentions vaguely that it received grants from “throughout North America,” but names of donor foundations weren’t given. Still, according to my calculations, over the past decade U. S. foundations accounted for at least 17% of the revenue of the David Suzuki Foundation. ” For that same year, Moore paid Suzuki’s foundation $570,868, tax returns show. In those three years alone, the Suzuki foundation took in US$3.
